Si è aperta al pubblico sabato 11 maggio 2019 la 58. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte dal titolo May You Live In Interesting Times, a cura di Ralph Rugoff. La pre-apertura per la stampa e gli addetti ai lavori si è svolta l’8, 9 e 10 maggio; la Cerimonia di premiazione e inaugurazione ha avuto luogo a Ca’ Giustinian, sede della Biennale, sabato 11 maggio.
“Ci siamo spesso interrogati” – ha dichiarato il Presidente Paolo Baratta – “sul ruolo della Biennale e sulle sfide che deve affrontare, consapevoli delle molteplici ambivalenti possibili letture del nostro lavoro (della nostra missione), che si distingue da tanti altri non per quello che si fa (Exhibitions) ma forse per lo spirito con cui lo si fa e per le modalità con cui si opera, modalità che a loro volta devono essere coerenti con quello spirito.
In tempi di grandi cambiamenti è parso a tutti necessario essere attenti all’evoluzione del mondo e del mondo dell’arte. Devo riconoscere che alla guida della Biennale di Venezia siamo agevolati in questo esercizio dall’essere attivi in diversi settori artistici – dal Teatro alla Musica alla Danza al Cinema all’Architettura – non cessano mai gli stimoli, le sfide e le sollecitazioni”.

La mostra si articola tra l’Arsenale (Proposta A) e il Padiglione Centrale (Proposta B) ai Giardini e include 79 partecipanti da tutto il mondo, ciascuno dei quali è presente in entrambe le sedi espositive, con opere diverse che mostrano aspetti diversi della pratica di ciascun artista.
«Molte delle opere esposte affrontano le tematiche contemporanee più preoccupanti – spiega Ralph Rugoff – dall’accelerazione dei cambiamenti climatici alla rinascita dei programmi nazionalisti in tutto il mondo, dall’impatto pervasivo dei social media alla crescente disuguaglianza economica. Tuttavia, dobbiamo partire dal presupposto per cui l’arte è più di una mera documentazione del periodo storico in cui viene realizzata».
«May You Live In Interesting Times mette in evidenza opere la cui forma attira l’attenzione su ciò che la forma stessa nasconde e sui molteplici scopi perseguiti dalle opere. Forse, indirettamente, queste opere possono diventare una sorta di guida per vivere e pensare in ‘tempi interessanti’. Possiamo senza dubbio imparare qualcosa dal modo in cui gli artisti di questa Biennale sfidano le consuetudini del pensiero e ampliano l’interpretazione che diamo a oggetti e immagini, scenari e situazioni decisamente eterogenei».

La mostra è affiancata da 89 Partecipazioni nazionali negli storici Padiglioni ai Giardini, all’Arsenale e nel centro storico di Venezia. Sono 4 i paesi presenti per la prima volta alla Biennale Arte: Ghana, Madagascar, Malesia e Pakistan. Il Padiglione Italia alle Tese delle Vergini in Arsenale, sostenuto e promosso dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, è a cura di Milovan Farronato.
Completano il panorama espositivo della Biennale Arte 2019 i 21 Eventi collaterali ammessi dal Curatore e promossi da enti e istituzioni nazionali e internazionali, organizzati in numerose sedi della città di Venezia.

The 58th International Art Exhibition, titled May You Live In Interesting Times and curated by Ralph Rugoff, opened to the public on Saturday 11th May 2019. The pre-opening for the Press and Professionals ran 8th, 9th, 10th May; the Awards ceremony and Inauguration was held at the Biennale headquarters of Ca’ Giustinian on Saturday 11th May.
“We have often reflected” –President Paolo Baratta declared– “on the role the Biennale should have and the challenges it must face, well aware of the many, ambivalent ways our work (and our mission) can be interpreted. Our work stands apart from that of many others, not for what it does (Exhibitions) but perhaps for the spirit with which it is done and for our work method, which, in turn, must hold true to that spirit.
In times of great change, we have all realized that we must pay attention to the evolution of the world and of the world of art. I must admit that, at the helm of La Biennale di Venezia, we are facilitated in this task since we are active in various artistic sectors – Theatre, Music, Dance, Cinema, and Architecture – and the stimuli, challenges, and incentives never lack”.

The exhibition develops from the Arsenale (Proposition A) to the Central Pavilion (Proposition B) at Giardini, and includes 79 participants from all over the world, each of whom is exhibited in both venues with different artworks that show different aspects of each artist’s practice.
As Ralph Rugoff explains: «From the acceleration of climate change to the resurgence of nationalist agendas across the globe, from the pervasive impact of social media to the growing disparity of wealth, contemporary matters of concern are addressed in many of the works in this exhibition. But let us acknowledge at the outset that art is more than a document of its times».
«May You Live In Interesting Times highlights artworks whose forms function in part to call attention to what forms conceal and the multifarious purposes that they fulfil. In an indirect manner, then, perhaps these artworks can serve as a kind of guide for how to live and think in ‘interesting times’. We can certainly learn from the way the artists in this Biennale challenge existing habits of thought and open up our readings of widely varied objects and pictures, scenarios and situations».

The exhibition also includes 89 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in the historic city centre of Venice. Four countries participate for the first time at the Biennale Arte: Ghana, Madagascar, Malaysia and Pakistan. The Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale, sponsored and promoted by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, is curated this year by Milovan Farronato.
The Biennale Arte 2019 is complemented by 21 Collateral Events admitted by the Curator and promoted by non-profit national and international bodies and institutions. Collateral Events take place in several locations throughout the city of Venice.
• The Biennale Arte 2019 will be open until Sunday 24th November 2019.

I PREMI UFFICIALI

La Cerimonia di premiazione si è svolta contestualmente all’inaugurazione della 58. Esposizione sabato 11 maggio 2019 a Ca’ Giustinian, sede della Biennale di Venezia.
La Giuria internazionale, presieduta da Stephanie Rosenthal e composta da Defne Ayas, Cristiana Collu, Sunjung Kim e Hamza Walker, ha assegnato i seguenti premi ufficiali:
Leone d’Oro per la migliore Partecipazione Nazionale alla Lituania.
Menzione speciale alla Partecipazione Nazionale del Belgio.
Leone d’Oro per il miglior partecipante alla Mostra Internazionale May You Live In Interesting Times a Arthur Jafa.
Leone d’Argento per un promettente giovane partecipante alla Mostra Internazionale May You Live In Interesting Times a Haris Epaminonda.
La Giuria ha inoltre deciso di assegnare due Menzioni speciali ai partecipanti: Teresa Margolles e Otobong Nkanga.
Il Cda della Biennale di Venezia, presieduto da Paolo Baratta, ha attribuito inoltre, su proposta del Curatore Ralph Rugoff, il Leone d’Oro alla carriera a Jimmie Durham.

The Awards Ceremony took place during the official opening of the 58th Exhibition, Saturday May 11th, 2019 at the headquarters of La Biennale di Venezia at Ca’ Giustinian.
The International Jury, chaired by Stephanie Rosenthal and composed of Defne Ayas, Cristiana Collu, Sunjung Kim, and Hamza Walker, has presented the following official awards:
Golden Lion for best National Participation to Lithuania.
Special Mention to the National Particpation of Belgium.
Golden Lion for Best Participant in the International Exhibition May You Live In Interesting Times to Arthur Jafa.
Silver Lion for a Promising Young Participant in the International Exhibition May You Live In Interesting Times to Haris Epaminonda.
The Jury has decided to award two Special Mentions to the following participants: Teresa Margolles and Otobong Nkanga.
Upon recommendation of the Curator Ralph Rugoff, the La Biennale di Venezia Board, chaired by Paolo Baratta, awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Jimmie Durham.

Si rinnova la collaborazione fra La Biennale di Venezia e Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, giunta all’ottavo anno consecutivo, che anche quest’anno offrirà particolari vantaggi ai viaggiatori Trenitalia interessati alle manifestazioni organizzate dalla Biennale.

TRENITALIA AND LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

The collaboration between Trenitalia and La Biennale di Venezia, which has just been renewed for the eighth year in a row, again this year will offer peculiar advantages to Trenitalia clients interested in the exhibitions organised by La Biennale.
The agreement, according to which Trenitalia will be the “official carrier” of the 58th International Art Exhibition, of the 76th Venice International Film Festival and of the Dance, Music and Theatre activities of La Biennale, provides for reduced-price tickets for the International Art Exhibition, the International Film Festival’s showings for which concessions are allowed and the shows open to the public organised by the Dance, Music and Theatre departments; all CartaFRECCIA members arriving in Venice with a Frecciargento, Frecciarossa and Frecciabianca ticket and holders of season tickets (monthly or annual) for regional transport in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia will be able to benefit from the concessions.
To obtain reduced-price tickets, simply show your Trenitalia loyalty card and the ticket to Venice (with date of the journey no earlier than three days from the date of the visit), or a season ticket for regional transport in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia at the venues’ ticket offices.
