Jakarta Fashion Week 2010/2011 The largest fashion event in the Southeast Asian region, the Jakarta Fashion Week 2010/11 (JFW), will be opened in November 6th and will end on November 12th 2010 at the luxurious Pacific Place shopping mall. More than 150 designers, 33 brands will participate in the event. The vibrancy of Indonesia’s fashion industry mirrors the country’s cultural diversity, open society as well as its booming domestic economy. Indonesia is the world’s largest Moslem country, the third largest democracy and one of the three rapidly growing Asian economies after China and India. The JFW 2010/11 will open with the show entitled A Tribute to Kebaya, featuring Kebaya, the national dress of Indonesian women as interpreted by more than 20 renowned designers. The following Sunday JFW will present a special collection created by one of Indonesia’s brightest talents Oscar Lawalata and British textile designer Laura Miles. Their collection is called Weaving the Future, in which the two designers worked together with traditional textile craftsmen and weavers, including from areas in Eastern Nusa Tenggara as well as other parts in Indonesia such as Garut, West Java.
Oscar and Laura aimed to apply modernity and a more global perspective while striving to maintain what is unique to the weaving technique of the regions, most importantly the fact that everything is handmade by the artisans. Oscar and Laura met after the Indonesian designer earlier in the year won the British Council International Young Creative Entrepreneur Award for fashion which resulted in a trip to London which culminated in this collaboration.
JFW will also present on the November 10th a restrospective show of ready-to-wear veteran Ghea Panggabean, who has been a force in Indonesian fashion since thirty years ago. Over the years, the bohemian-spirited Ghea consistently produces ethnic fashion, based on traditional textiles from various parts of Indonesia as well as India, while incrementally infusing more mature design lines. Facilitated by the JFW organizer, Ghea has also partnered with renowned young Indonesian architect Andra Matin, whose modern designs have been recorded in prestigious global publications such as The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture, to create a special installation symbolizing her evolution over three decades. Such an inter-disciplinary collaboration has never done before in Indonesia. The installation will be displayed in the Atrium area at the Pacific Place mall.
Last but not least, the event finale the Jakarta Fashion Week 2010/11: Dewi Fashion Knights, “Style Spectrum” on November 12th 2010. Presented by the country’s leading fashion magazine Dewi, Dewi Fashion Knights has become one of the most anticipated events for fashion lovers.
